Recycling is a complex issue, but one we cannot afford to ignore. With raw materials becoming ever scarcer, recycling is growing in importance. Loacker was quick to recognise the need for sustainable business policies, and has reflected this realisation in its new slogan, “The future is recycling”. “Without a balanced relationship between environmental protection, social responsibility and commercial considerations long-term business success is impossible. That is the future,” Michael Loacker notes.

Loacker is helping to cut CO2 emissions by moving into a new strategic line of business. The group will invest EUR 50–60 million in renewable energy up to 2016. Photovoltaic, wind and biomass power generation are a logical extension of conventional recycling operations. “Renewable energy is a key element of our growth strategy, and also underlines our green credentials. Flexibility, cutting edge technology and high quality will be vital for our success on the renewable power generation market,” said Thomas Schäfer, head of Corporate Development. Loacker currently operates six photovoltaic arrays in Germany and Italy, and the addition of a new free-standing array in Slovakia will take the group’s total generating capacity to 4.5 MW.
